Gola bhat (Rice with balls)

How to prepare Gola bhat ?

Gola in marathi means balls and bhat  in marathi means rice.

Ingredients:

For rice

  • 1 cup rice – wash and soak into water for about 20 minutes
  • 1/4 tsp red chili powder
  • 1/4 tsp turmeric powder (optional)
  • 1 tsp lemon juice
  • 2 tsp oil
  • salt to taste
For making the balls
  • half cup besan / gram flour
  • 2 tsp dry grated coconut
  • 1/2 tsp red chili powder
  • 1/2 tsp coriander powder
  • 1/2 tsp cumin powder
  • 1/4 tsp turmeric powder
  • 1/2 tsp carom seeds
  • 1/4 cup – chopped cilantro
  • 2 tsp lemon juice
  • water as needed
  • salt to taste
For tempering / tadka
  • 2 tsp oil
  • 3-4 red chillies
  • 1/2 tsp mustard seeds
  • 1/2 tsp cumin seeds
  • pinch of asafoetida
Procedure:
  • Drain the water from rice. Heat oil in a pan and add soaked rice to it. Saute for 2-3 minutes. Add 2 cups of hot water, red chili powder, turmeric powder, lemon juice and salt to taste. Mix well and cover the pan.
  • Meanwhile, make the besan golas. Take besan in a mixing bowl. Add grated coconut, coriander powder, cumin powder, red chili powder, turmeric powder, carom seeds (ajwain), chopped cilantro/ coriander, lemon juice and salt to taste. Add little water and mix well to make a dough almost similar to chapathi/roti dough . Make 5-6 small sized balls.
  • When the rice is about 90% cooked, open the cover and make a space using spatula, Place the besan balls / golas in it. Cover the balls with rice. Again close the lid and let rice simmer on low heat for about 15-20 minutes. Besan balls will get cooked in this time.
  • Add tadka on rice by heating oil in a pan. Add mustard seeds, cumin seeds, pinch of asafoetida and red chillies. Pour this tadka on hot rice. Serve with raita.
  • Serve to Lord Krishna and enjoy His prasadam.
